Lake Austin · Fall 2026

Lake Austin drawdown 2026: hydrilla at your dock.

The lake is scheduled down about 10 feet from October 12 through November 30, 2026. That window helps shoreline maintenance. It does not replace permitted hydrilla work — or a plan for when the water comes back.

What was announced

The City of Austin asked LCRA to draw down Lake Austin between Mansfield Dam and Tom Miller Dam from October 12 through November 30, 2026. Officials describe a drop of about 10 feet so property owners and city departments can work on docks, bulkheads, debris, and shoreline maintenance. Refill is planned to start in late November.

The city’s public notice says owners may use exposed lakebed for repairs, dredging boat slips, debris removal, and managing nuisance vegetation. Some of that still needs City of Austin or TPWD permits — including dock construction, bulkhead work, and sediment removal. Hydrilla removal on public water is not automatically “anything goes” because the water is lower.

Will lowering the lake kill hydrilla?

Short answer: do not count on it. Austin Watershed Protection has said drawdowns are useful for shoreline access and can temporarily reduce some plants, but historical hydrilla data does not show drawdowns as an effective long-term control. Staff have also warned that exposing the bed can reduce competing plants and leave hydrilla room to rebound.

The city’s primary lake-wide tool remains sterile grass carp, stocked to slow hydrilla without wiping out every plant in the reservoir. Carp will not keep your slip clear the week guests arrive. Localized manual removal still will.

What dock owners can do during the drawdown

  • Reach hydrilla and other lake weeds that are usually under several feet of water around the dock and swim area.
  • Bag and haul plant matter so fragments do not sit on the exposed bed and wash back at refill.
  • Pair a cleanup with a lake blanket on high-use bottom before the lake returns — only where the bed is cleared and the product is appropriate.
  • Confirm City dock/bulkhead permits separately if you are repairing structures, not only pulling weeds.

Permits still matter

Public-water hydrilla is a prohibited exotic. Treating, physically removing, or stocking biological controls typically needs an approved TPWD treatment proposal. The drawdown does not erase that. If you hire a contractor, use the hiring checklist and ask who holds the permit. More detail is on our regulations page and the agency links list.

Drawdown is a maintenance window, not a hydrilla strategy. If you only cut what you can reach and leave fragments on the bed, refill day becomes someone else’s infestation — including yours.
